Vehicle Registration in Jamaica: Requirements, Costs & Online Renewal
As of July 21, 2025, Tax Administration Jamaica issues only electronic Motor Vehicle Registration Certificates — no paper documents, no windshield stickers. Here's everything you need to know about the new system.
Jamaica's vehicle registration system has undergone a complete digital transformation. As of July 21, 2025, Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) issues only electronic Motor Vehicle Registration Certificates (eMVRC) — no paper documents, no windshield stickers.
Whether you are registering a car for the first time or renewing an existing licence, here is everything Jamaican motorists need to know about the new system, costs, and how to complete the process online.
What Is Vehicle Registration in Jamaica?
Vehicle registration is the official process of licensing your motor vehicle with Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) so it can legally operate on public roads. Under the Road Traffic Act, every vehicle must be registered and display valid licence plates. Registration links your vehicle to its owner in the National Vehicle Register and must be renewed before expiry to remain valid.
Who Needs to Register a Vehicle in Jamaica?
All motor vehicles used on public roads in Jamaica must be registered and licenced. This applies to:
- Private motor vehicle owners (white plates) — Every privately owned car, SUV, pickup, or motorcycle. This is the only category currently eligible for fully online renewal.
- Public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators — Taxis, route buses, and other vehicles carrying fare-paying passengers. Requires registration and additional Transport Authority licensing.
- Commercial vehicle owners (green plates) — Trucks, delivery vans, and other goods-transport vehicles.
- Diplomatic and government vehicles — Registered through designated administrative channels.
- New vehicle purchasers — Anyone who buys a new or imported used vehicle must register it before driving it on the road.
Requirements for Vehicle Registration
Whether registering for the first time or renewing, you need the following:
- Valid motor vehicle insurance — Third-party insurance is mandatory. TAJ electronically verifies your insurance status through the Insurance Association of Jamaica (IAJ) database.
- Valid Certificate of Fitness — Your vehicle must pass inspection at an Island Traffic Authority (ITA) facility. Fitness certificate validity now varies by vehicle age.
- A valid email address — Required for all transactions to receive your eMVRC.
- Personal identification — Your Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) and a valid government-issued ID such as a driver's licence or passport.
- Previous registration details — For renewals, your existing plate number or expired certificate information.
- Payment — The applicable fee based on vehicle type and registration period selected.
How to Renew Vehicle Registration Online
Private motor vehicle owners can renew registration entirely online in approximately five minutes:
- Visit www.jamaicatax.gov.jm and navigate to the eMVRC hub.
- The system validates your Certificate of Fitness and insurance status electronically in real time. You cannot proceed without both.
- Select your registration period: 6 months, 1 year, or 2 years.
- Enter your email address — double-check its accuracy as your eMVRC instructions will be sent here.
- Pay by credit card to complete the transaction online.
- Check your email for a link to the Certificate Generation and Delivery Service (CGDS) portal, where you can generate, download, save, or print your digital certificate.

Important Changes Since July 2025
The Road Traffic Amendment Act 2025 introduced fundamental changes effective July 21, 2025:
No More Physical Documents
TAJ no longer issues paper registration certificates or windscreen decals. All documents are electronic. You are no longer required to carry or display physical certificates.
Email-Based Delivery
Your eMVRC is delivered by email. You can download, save, print, or regenerate it anytime through the CGDS portal if lost.
Digital Verification
Police, insurers, and banks can verify your registration and fitness status digitally through the CGDS portal — no physical document required.
2-Year Registration Option
Introduced in July 2025. Lock in two years at once with no extra cost. Over 3,200 motorists opted for this in the first month alone.
Certificate of Fitness Validity by Vehicle Age
| Vehicle Age | Fitness Certificate Validity |
|---|---|
| 0–3 years (new vehicles) | Up to 5 years |
| 4–10 years | 3 years |
| Over 10 years | Annual renewal required |
The Role of Insurance
Motor vehicle insurance is not optional. The Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third-Party Risks) Act mandates that every vehicle on the road carries at least third-party coverage. TAJ's online system automatically verifies your insurance status during registration — you cannot renew without valid cover in place.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I renew my vehicle registration online?
Yes. Owners of private motor vehicles (white plates) can renew entirely online at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm in approximately five minutes. The system validates your fitness certificate and insurance electronically. Once payment is made, your eMVRC is delivered by email. Public passenger, commercial, diplomatic, and newly registered vehicles must still visit a tax office in person.
Do I still need a windshield sticker?
No. Since July 21, 2025, TAJ has stopped issuing physical decals, stickers, and paper certificates. Your registration is now an electronic document (eMVRC) that you can download, save, or print. Police verify your status digitally — you are no longer required to display or carry physical documents.
What happens if my registration expires?
Under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Act, you have a one-month grace period after expiry to renew without penalty. However, driving with an expired licence beyond that grace period can result in fines and confiscation of your vehicle keys. You can renew online up to 90 days before expiry and up to 11 months after.
Can someone else renew on my behalf?
Yes. For in-person transactions, the owner can authorise someone to act on their behalf with a letter of authorisation or Power of Attorney, along with the required identification and documents. For online renewal, anyone with access to your vehicle details, TRN, and payment method can complete the process.
